02 NEWS: REPRESENTATION

 1. women are underrepresented, it reflects the patriarchal society and social attitudes. In the first article, the woman is clearly represented as an object  as they're only shown in lingerie adverts. Men would only like to read this if women are presented this way and this is what they want to see. Women were meant to please their husbands and this was their way of doing it. As the reader, this makes me feel sorry for the women as this is only how they were viewed as back then.

Barbra castle wanted equal pay and demanded that they should have it, this reflects social and cultural contexts of the 1960's in which it was accepted that women were paid less than men for doing the same job.

Stephan was born African and after he married Elizabeth which reflects cultural contexts of a white culture that saw what were known as 'mixed marriages' as so unusual and newsworthy.

Representation of age or gender

Age:

Celebrates older musicians, anti stereotypical  of most magazines to have old people on the front cover, popular musicians tend to be depicted as young people.

The stereotypical representation of older people as facing an uncertain future.

The stereotypical linking of excess and youth but using a photo of the members of Queen when young to illustrate a cover line about excess.

Gender:

Male seriousness and authority in the image of Nick Cave, male artists as excessive in the cover line about Queen.

Stereotypical link of masculinity and warfare in the cover line about Billy Bragg.

Explain how music videos use media language to promote their artists (10)

Mise en scene: Teenage dirtbag

editing, camerawork, set in a high school and hierarchy of people who are important, roles include jocks, codes who has power and who doesn't, colours are deeply saturated which are American tv drama-bright strong colours, powerful rock car that the jocks owns compared to the teenage dirt bags bike and is bullied

In this narrative there is a very traditional delivery of both performance and story, during the chorus the camera rests on close ups .

MUSIC MAGAZINES: MEDIA LANGUAGE

Look carefully at the front covers of MOJO and RNR magazines.

QUESTION: How far do MOJO and RNR use different media language to create different connotations? (CONNOTATION meaning: an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning.)

Answer on your blog. This is a high-value question and should take all lesson to answer. You can use the class blog search engine for more examples of how to analyse music magazines.

In your answer you should have 2 paragraphs:

  • analyse the media language in MOJO and RNR magazine. 'Media language' includes the placement of the main image, the type of photography, lighting, colours, fonts, how busy or restrained the cover is, the layout (such as alignment to the margins), how serious or playful
  • make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently in both extracts to create different connotations. Are there similarities in both covers? What sorts of audiences are they targeting? You could think about MOJO's rock aesthetic of living loud and dangerously compared to RNR's folk, rock, blues vibe.

Mojo- The font is loud and funky which connotes with the word 'adventures' which is the main heading. This media language conveys the Rockstar lifestyle of excess. Mojo has a cluttered and busy cover because of its numerous cover lines, images, puffs as well as a very dynamic covermount in neon colours with a vibrant cartoon image. RnR also has many cover lines but they are all minimalistic and justified to the RH margin. They are all in white creating a calm orderly unclattered organised quality. Equally the covermount with its modest verbal play unheard is very plain and streamlined. Mojos choice of colours is vibrant, electric and dynamic particularly in the primary colours of the covermount with its playful skeleton. By contrast RnR uses soft dull browns and only red as an accent colour.
  • Although both music magazines feature many articles which is typical of music magazines RnR is more orderly and restrained.
  • In my view there are contrasts, although both magazines conform to genre conventions, although both magazines feature a star and both magazines celebrate a star, mojo does so in a more dynamic aggressive confrontational way compared to RNR gentle lowkey folksy vibe. This is because mojo targets a primarily rock audience while RNR is aimed at folk and blues audience.

Cover page photo can be cut off to cause effect and I can do dark colours to resemble emotions and feelings.

Main title/cover line will be SOCIAL MEDIA KILLER and I could have blood dripping from the words killer that spread onto the next page. Inside the words social media I could have an image full of words of emotions or darkness and I would write about the impact of social media and why it has become so toxic.

Main article:

Social media used to be an absolute wonder of invention and a jaw dropping creation, but now, what has it become? People are pressured to live the perfect life, have the perfect body and live up to all the beauty standards.

PAPER 1 EXAM FEEDBACK

Q.3 How far does Cuffs adapt police drama conventions to fit its family audience at 8 p.m. on BBC1?

In your answer you must

  • state what conventions you could expect from most TV police drama
  • analyse the programme's use of genre conventions, making sure that you cover the whole episode (not just the extract played in the exam). This means explaining all the crimes that occur in the episode and everything that the police have to deal with that may be upsetting for viewers.
  • explain who the audience is for Cuffs
  • explain how far the programme adapted conventions
  • draw conclusions about how far the extract adapts the conventions of police drama to fit its scheduling and audience

Cuffs adapts police drama conventions to fit its family audience at 8pm on BBC1 by presenting the tv show to all audiences but mainly adults and young adults, as it starts at 8pm most young children will be asleep therefore more adults will be able to view the program. The scene at the start where the naked people turn around may not be appropriate to young children so they purposely started the show later so young children wouldn't be able to watch it. The scene where the man is killed in the corner shop by a bunch of boys can be quite graphic and make people feel unsettled or uncomfortable.

In conclusion, Cuffs does adapt its series to fit family audiences.

MUSIC MAGAZINES

  • Analyse the media language of MOJO and the BBC magazine.
  • Make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently to fit different kinds of music. (15)
Media language is presented in Mojo with the genre of of classical rock, conveying that it has a rock artist on the front, it has a very bold and colourful front page which is extremely eye-catching to me and the readers. Certain colours are used like reds and black which are quite outgoing and bold. The man who is photographed in the middle of the image has a very plain look, he looks quite serious and quite stern which could reflect his band and how serious they are about playing music. He has very artistic makeup which you wouldn't commonly see in the streets therefore people may be attracted to this and interested about what perhaps the magazine is going to be about. The newspaper includes san serif writing which is very bold and simple.

Compared to the BBC magazine the genre which is classical impacts the front page, plain colours and simple writing, there isn't any boldness or anything shouting at your face full of colours. The clothes the artist is wearing gives off a warm impression, he isn't wearing anything too out there or bold but instead just simple colours. The boy is showing a smile which can infer that he's happy and he likes what he's doing, he likes playing music to people and especially as he is very young, it's quite impressive. It can also suggest that he's welcoming the readers, they should read this magazine because he's friendly and inviting.

In conclusion, media language is more formal in the BBC magazine and is aimed at different people compared to the Mojo magazine which is informal and aimed at certain people who like classical rock.

03 brief 1

For the magazine my main story would be about social media
i could do:
-why i enjoy social media
-dangers of social media
-impacts of social media
-personal views on social media
-how to inspire people on social media

I could use bright colours for the title making it eye-catching and use the same colour scheme throughout, I could also use images related to social media with the different titles. I think this would be a really good idea because its something everyone uses and enjoys and there is a lot to say about it and that it would be directly aimed at a teen audience and it could help them and also warn them about dangers online. For the front cover i could have a picture of myself or someone else on their phone or maybe a picture of someone with loads of feeling surrounding them to show the impact of social media. For the double page spread i could talk about why i enjoy social media and why people use it a lot.

My title: Social media killer

03 creating media

Television:
I would talk about the popular bands and artists there are and which songs are in top charts in that moment of time and could include snips of the songs.

Website:
For my website i would include my hobbies or made up hobbies, i enjoy social media, fashion, listening to music and so on, for the video i could include me doing one of these hobbies, i could do it about my favourite songs or artists.

Magazine:
In the magazine i could do it based on social media and the uses of it and the dangers, i could include various pictures and show the different apps on social media platforms. On the double page there could be about what different app is like and what its used for and why its so popular.

Music video
For this i could include my favourite singers and their songs and create an emotional or happy video, i would chose a song many people know and are fairly used to and i could include cool effects and editing.

I think that i'm edging towards doing either the magazine or website because i think that making the website would be fun and i could include things i enjoy doing inside of it however i would also like to do the magazine because i think that it would be really useful and especially as i plan to do it on something everyone is aware of and knows about.

01 The Avengers

What is your impression of the sixties era?

My impression of the sixties era is that it was a very happy colourful and bright time to live in, people were always having fun and living the best of life. The clothes they wore also gave this impression because they wore brightly coloured clothes that they liked to show off at the time and they weren't bothered about other peoples opinions and what people viewed them as. The music was also very significant and gave a very happy impression and most songs were upbeat and had everyone dancing too, it seemed like one of the best times to be around for.

Where does this come from?

This comes from the trailer we watched, 'Austin Powers', as it shows us what the people wore, which were brightly coloured clothing, their emotions which for the majority of the time they were happy and uplifted. Austin Powers who was very confident and outgoing also suggests how other people were like.

Five key events from the sixties that shaped it

Martin Luther King Jr, Cuban missile crisis, moon landings, the Vietnam war and civil rights protest

Five famous figures that associated with this era

John Lennon, Martin Luther King jr, Paul Mccartney, Neil Armstrong and John F Kennedy

01 CUFFS

Chapter  4/ 5 in the scene at the shop, how is camerawork used to create meanings? Find examples of camera angles, camera shot types and camera movement.

In chapter 4, the camerawork is used to create different meanings by filming in different shots, at the very start of the chapter there is a long shot which then becomes a close up as the camera moves into the cupboard where Kalim was standing watching what had happened. This makes is seem suspenseful as the camera moves slowly into the darkness until you see his face. Another camera shot is when the man is lying on the floor, they use a high angle shot so you can see the man properly, they do this so we are able to see what happened to him and how he died. Once the attack happened and the policewoman was talking to the owner of the shop, the camera gives an over the shoulder shot, the meaning if this is to make it seem as if we, the audience are there in that scene which draws the audience even more.

Tv in the 2010's

 1. Explain technological convergence. [2] Technological convergence means that it can be available on things such as television sets, mobile phones, gaming devices and any technical platforms, it means that television is able to be watched and transferred onto different devices.

2. Explain 'channel surfing'. [2] Channel surfing is when you skip through a series of programmes to try get to the one you are looking for or the one you want.

3. Give 3 examples of how channels create brand loyalty [6] One example of how channels create brand loyalty is that they use ads, this could be a snippet of a certain show which could easily draw people in, another example is that they could have a very suspenful scene and end it in a cliff-hanger which forces the watcher to want to see the next episode or scene, lastly the last example is that they already pre-record the show or series so people don't miss out on it and can watch it anytime.

4. What is 'long form television drama' ? [2] Long form television drama is a type of drama which ensure the watchers loyalty, the audience have to watch every episode whenever it is released.

5. What is a 'flagship' programme? [2] A flagship programme is a programme that is directed at a certain audience, the people that are watching will be appealed because it is aimed at them therefore they should enjoy the show.

6. In exchange for the licence fee, what does the regulator require of the BBC as a Public Service Broadcasting channel? [6] It requires original programming, a mix of genres, arts and informational programming like the news. The bigger the variety of programmes and shows, the bigger audience as people can find more things that they want to watch.

01 TELEVISION

We look at current news articles about the BBC and return to the OCR fact sheet on the television industry.

According to The Times newspaper this week,  watching TV live and in real time accounts for most TV viewing.

  1. What do you understand by the terms 'live' content and 'on demand' content? The terms 'live' makes me understand that the watchers are up to date and know exactly what's going on, the word 'live' refers that the audience are also 'alive' and are interacting with the tv and the information that they are given. The term 'demand' content suggests that the readers are able to access the newspapers anytime and so they can watch whenever.
  2. What is the demand for 'live' content like? The demand for 'live' content is that people want to have the same experience as you do on other platforms on this platform, it's also that people want to be able to watch things at certain times as they may be busy sometimes and unable to watch their favourite shows.
  3. According to ratings research, there are 8 programmes cited as the top live shows for family viewing. How many have you watched? I have watched; Strictly, Britain's got talent, the great British bake off.
  4. Apply Blumler and Katz's audience framework to what you learn from this article. The Blumler and Katz's audience framework is used here because of the entertainment and the interaction skills where people can both enjoy it and be interacting with each other, especially families and society in general, which would make people feel more connected to each other. The image below would intrigue people as they could be people they look up too which would attract more readers.

How is John Lennon presented on the front cover of the magazine?

Write about how musicians are represented on this MOJO cover.

John Lennon is presented as looking quite stern and serious, like he is a very important person, which he is. As a reader it will make them respect him just by looking at his facial expressions as he is very important to the music industry. The picture of him takes a lot of the front cover up and it is placed directly in the middle of the page so it catches people's eyes as he is a very well known man, it will make people want to read the magazine if it includes people like him who are perhaps people they look up to. The background is a blue colour which contrasts well with his image as it makes him stand out even more, making it attract more customers. It is a very colourful magazine which again is very important because it can impact how many people buy and read it. It also includes a CD which might make people think is very terrific as its worth the price, Mojo magazines try and pact as much information as they can on the front cover to make people buy it, they'll use short snippets of words that will catch peoples eyes and fascinate them.

In conclusion, the cover is very important as it engages the reader, the imagine of John Lennon is also very important and his facial expressions tell a lot and how the reader views him.
