Trailer

Yesterday we watched the trailer of the dramatic and scary film called A Quiet Place. AS we knew we were trying to make out own thriller trailer similar to this, I was looking for all of the key details to add to our trailer. I focussed on the camera shots, sudden black screens and sound. Sound is so important as it helps deliver what is going on and the emotional effects. Although the silence in this trailer made it very eerie and tense. 

Tabi and I decided that our trailer would be about a girl who went missing 8 years ago randomly. There were never any suspects of witnesses' and so it was like she vanished off the face of the world. In our trailer it shows what happened to the girl and where she is now after all these years. 

We used iMovie on my phone to film it and used a frightening layout. The idea was that wherever i went, the stalker would go too. The trailer started with me walking and then suddenly three quick camera shots of her walking as if the stalker was videoing me. We edited a recording and focussing feature of a camera onto the pictures which I think gives a lot of effect. For the next parts which we filmed, we did me running away and then when i thought i was safe, a hand covers my mouth and drags me away. Although we haven't finished, we have been editing along the way with colour changes and cropping little details onto the film. We left the sound in over the top of the chilling music we chose to give it layers and more interaction with the characters emotions. The shots that we have done include mostly action shots of someone following me as i runs away. 

The inter titles we thought were effective were very short and mysterious ones such as: 'have you seen Ella Rowell' and 'presumed dead' etc. We thought that this gave the trailer a gripping feeling ad the person watching it would want to know what happens next. 

Out next step will be to go into the class and edit it further using the schools laptops.

Example of how to answer on camerawork:

•   sweeping aerial shot of Brighton pier connoting a glamorous seaside location

•   bird’s eye view of the small police car driving through

  the streets of Brighton on a call-out, carrying connotations such as danger, excitement, and urgency

•   the use of an over-the-shoulder shot of the beach sign, as we arrive at the sign at the same time as the police officer, connoting surprise and anticipation of what is to come

•   slow pan / track of the new recruit police officers as they are introduced to the audience connoting authority and power

•   high angle long shot of the beach scene showing the police officer outnumbered by the group of men on the stag do

•   any other relevant analysis 

• In the extract, camerawork is used to create a a reaction shot in the first scene. Jo who is a senior police officer is talking to the man about the incident which happened and you can clearly see her reaction as she's he's talking to her. It tells the audience what type of emotions she's feelings and how she's sympathising with him showing that she feels sorry that maybe she should have done something to help their family.

• Another way camerawork is used to create an over the shoulder shot as the Police officer is telling his son to go back to school. This is very effective as its almost like there is someone behind the officer like another police officer in the cameras shoes watching the boys.

The extract creates a humorous view of policing when one of the police officers was trying to arrest the girl for stealing however she started undressing herself whilst her friend was recording to make it look like he was trying to do inappropriate things to her. This scene can come across as humorous and funny for the older generation as they would fully understand but not so much for the younger generation. Another point is that the girl being arrested winks at the police officer and tries flirting with him, this also comes across as quite humorous as its something unusual and unexpected.

1. Find one example of the representation of a woman and say how she is represented.

On the bottom left corner, there is an image of a woman in underwear or lingerie which is clearly an advert for the clothes, however this woman is represented as more of an object than an actual person, the advert had clearly and very smartly used an eye-catching picture that people of any kind will look at, they made the woman look attractive and meet expectations of what men might want. The poses in which she is making adds to the attractiveness and makes men in particular like to look at it which is not a good thing for a woman to be represented as especially today in the society we live in.

2. Find another contrasting example of a woman and say how she is represented

The image in the second newspaper shows the Queen looking quite worried and anxious, it creates a whole different scene on how woman are looked at. The Queen looks caught up in her feelings and is one of the people that everyone looks up at and so her reaction going to the 'incident' that happened in Wales shows us that she really is thoughtful and emphasises with the people around her. The fact that the Queen wouldn't usually turn up to tragic events like this one shows what is truly inside of her and that must have shocked a lot of people.

2. Find one example of a news story about the Cold War

An example of the Cold War found in the newspaper was 'Unions postpone strike' as there title which clearly was trying to tell people about what was going on as they would have ben quite concerned at the time.

3. Find one example of a story about a domestic disaster

An example of the domestic disaster was the picture of the Queen with the caption 'Queen visits the mourning valley', this was obviously a very large disaster that the nation would have been shocked by especially as the Queen took time out of her day to visit it. 

4. Find one example of a story about a European disaster

An example of a European disaster was '68 dead in Italian flood', this would have been very tragic and unexpected as in those days people knew nothing about what weather was coming and how bad it was therefore people weren't able to get prepared for it. It was a very devastating disaster that sadly killed a lot of people.

 Explain at least two uses and gratifications of video games using Blumer and Katz's theory. Refer to the Lego movie to support your answer.

One way that video games use gratifications is that the theory states that it gives a sense of identity therefore playing video games, makes your real self come out as you have options to do certain things whilst playing. Another key element is that video games can easily take your mind of anything and if you had a rough day at school for an example, then playing a fun video game would distract you from the stress that you had therefore it could actually improve mental health. Escapism is very important and some stages in like especially when things aren't going exactly how you would like them to go and by playing a fun and enjoyable game it would be good to take a break from reality.  

Another gratification is that it entertains people, the Lego movie was clearly liked and became very popular especially for younger children, and having a game to play in their spare time would keep them entertained for a while especially as it would be age appropriate. In the Lego movie game it is very important that the game is exciting and fun, if it was dull and boring it would have an impact on the people as they wouldn't want to play it but on the movie itself as less people would want to watch it.

One way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other is that each music video tells a different story, each song that is sang has a story behind it and that will be produced by a music video so that either people can understand the meanings of lyrics more and that also it attracts more people to listen to their music. An example is that Teenage Dirtbag is about a boy who desperately wants to win this girls heart who has a boyfriend, and he’s the popular sporty type of boy compared to the other boy who’s a nerd and is the complete opposite, it ends up that the girl finally leaves her boyfriend for the nerd because of the way he was treating him and they go to prom but only till the end when we all realize it was just a dream. Some lines stand out like ‘she doesn’t give a damn about me’ and this tells us that at first the girl doesn’t know who the boy is but then when she finally realizes what her boyfriend is doing to him, she leaves him and does notice the boy eventually. The story in this music video is also quite a basic story and that can have an impact on the younger audience to understand more, it is also quite relaxed as in one part as they’re playing the drums with bananas which can be seen as funny and laid back. The other music video called Sk8ter Boi is about a girl who’s singing about her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend who didn’t like him as well as her friends because he was a skater boy and he wore baggy clothes and she on the other hand was a ballet dancer, the complete opposite. The music video is very skater much like, it has graffiti all over the walls, with lots of crowds of people, with the boyfriend recording her sing she has all this eye makeup and the skater clothes which make her look goth like. The song all ends up telling us that the skater boy will end up famous and being on MTV with his ex-girlfriend going to watch him and knowing she turned him down and that she will regret doing that, and the girl singing the song gives us hints that she is perhaps a bit jealous of her.

It is a television series, film or novel and it emphasises procedures used by the police in solving the crimes. People like to watch these because it tends to be about the most important thing in a character’s life. They are also usually based on real life situations and people find these very interesting and entertaining to watch.  People also like trying to find things out like they do in these series or novels, it’s like they can be part of it also.
